All right, mistake number, what are we up to here for of why news resolutions really so often just do not work? These are the mistakes that we make. This one’s a biggie today. This one is fundamental and honestly, I have observed this so many times in my very first behaviour change program.

It was called Small Steps to Whole Foods, and there was this approach to change that I had come across when I was doing lots of work in the sustainability space, figuring out what gets people to move towards something that they say they want, but sometimes makes life a little bit uncomfortable in the interim, or we’re just busy doing stuff. We’ve got our eyes on a million different things, easily distracted, all that stuff that I’ve spoken about before, and it was the kaizen approach to behaviour change. And this approach is really just so, so basic and it, it’s the foundation of everything that I’ve ever taught. And what I realised when I was helping women take small steps is that something changes in your identity. You suddenly become someone because you’ve made it so simple to take a step in the direction of something you’ve been saying you wanted for ages, then you start becoming a person who does create change. You start becoming someone who has an exercise routine because you figured out how to make that first step, take it and then do it again. The kaizen approach is really about building on small things. And now there’s so many books about it. Atomic Habits is out there saying the exact same thing that I have observed in my community of women, which is mostly mums who feel pretty stretched in their everyday lives. They’re dissatisfied or frustrated or with things that they keep on doing time and time again. But to shift it actually feels impossible sometimes, and it’s because their core identity has tried something like new’s resolutions over and over again. This is the year, this is the year, this is the year I’m going to change, blah, blah. This is the year I’m going to stop, blah, blah. And then it doesn’t work because ultimately they’re working from the identity of change isn’t possible for me or the identity of, I try it for a few weeks and I always end up back where I started or the identity of, I’ve got no time and space anyway.

 It’s easier to just do what I do. And unless you actually shift your identity into being someone who has the thing that you are saying you want, you are always going to be a person with those old stories, with that old identity. And so oftentimes women are like, I just, I’m just think differently now. I feel different now after they’ve completed my programs. And it’s because I know this. It’s because I know that in order to create lasting change, you have to actually shift at your identity level. You have to believe you can. You have to believe you can have what it is that you’re saying you want. And the best way that I have found for a woman to shift her identity is by leading her through a series of simple changes that she can and does make that help her into that space of believing, shifting her identity. It is an amazing, amazing feeling when you become the person who trusts herself and knows the path to creating positive changes. It is not out of your reach. It is not it’s possible for all of us.

 And that’s exactly what happens inside the change room.
