I thought travelling with backpacks and three kids I thought travelling with backpacks and three kids on my own for five months was going to be really tough. And it definitely wasn’t EASY but I shared this from Munich around this time last year and seeing it again has reminded me of the ridiculous mental load of raising three kids at home. The logistics alone - argh! I’ve really noticed this year, following our travels , how consuming it is and how full my brain is and how weeks just fly by. There are so many different ways to live and I wonder (often!) if I’m making the best choice. Of course, I acknowledge the huge amount of privilege that I have to be able to make choices about where and how we live and I don’t take that for granted. But I’m sharing this because it’s never a bad thing to remind parents that’s it’s a huge gig raising kids. The load is massive. No one is making it up or exaggerating. I ponder, weekly, packing up and doing this differently. And yet, family and friends are so precious and the kids are doing really well and … and …. and…. Ahhhh I had so many moments of realisation on that trip, it was an extraordinary time. I wrote about the moments that changed me in ten short stories. Last night I needed to get some work finished and Last night I needed to get some work finished and here’s what happened… Aside from the pain of the daylight savings transition, one kid needed to talk through something that happened at school, another wanted to be wrapped up like a baby because, well, I have no idea 🤷🏼‍♀️, and the other had a moth fall onto their shoulder, freak them out and then we spent fifteen minutes trying to lure it out from under the bed so that it didn’t fly out and do the same thing again. Just another night… 😂 I don’t often work at night anymore though this was my life for years. Building a business amongst babies and toddlers I’d take whatever chance I could! I reckon it’s actually been to my advantage. My attention wanes and so if I knew I had a two hour nap time to get things done, you betcha that I’d make it happen. Completely imperfectly and not necessarily to the highest standards but I’ve always been more interested in moving things forward than getting them perfect. Perfection is ‘pure-fiction’ I heard someone say the other day and it reminded me of something I’ve talked about here for years. When we realise that ‘perfect’ is just a made up construct in our heads we set ourselves free. There’s literally no such thing. I could always do better, improve on things, wait until I know more, have my hair done, be healed - before I show up and share and create. But then nothing would have happened. Or at least not as much. Giving myself permission to take ‘imperfect action’ has been essential on this path. I encourage my kids with it all the time too. So I’m up again this morning having another crack. Creating and working amongst the juggle of it all. Imperfectly. And now I will press publish on this post even though my daughter has arrived in my room, dressed, saying it’s a grest day to go for a bike ride to the beach before school. And she’s pretty right. So I won’t edit or correct it. I’ll post as is. I actually don’t know how I haven’t come acros I actually don’t know how I haven’t come across this beautiful poem by @poetellenbass before. It so perfectly describes the heaviness of grief and how you can still say yes to life amongst it. The Thing Is… to love life, to love it even when you have no stomach for it and everything you’ve held dear crumbles like burnt paper in your hands, your throat filled with the silt of it. When grief sits with you, its tropical heat thickening the air, heavy as water more fit for gills than lungs; when grief weights you down like your own flesh only more of it, an obesity of grief, you think, How can a body withstand this? Then you hold life like a face between your palms, a plain face, no charming smile, no violet eyes, and you say, yes, I will take you I will love you, again. Oooof so good. Thank you Ellen
