The 2017 shot was a selfie I took with my daughter that we sent to her Dad who was in his second day of rehab for alcohol addiction.

We told the kids he was in a hospital to fix his tummy.

He was there three weeks.

Less than two years later, after being in and out of many rehabs, he was dead.

The second photo was taken in Tokyo, the first stop on a five-month overseas adventure the kids and I had last year.

Six years between pics and it feels like three lifetimes were lived.

I look at the version of Lisa in 2017, the one that had no idea what was coming, and feel big feelings.

I mean - it literally takes my breath away to think of what life was then, and what it turned into.

In that moment I was shell-shocked at what had transpired the previous few months and that we’d arrived at this supposed ‘rock bottom’ moment.

I think, if I could go back in time, I wouldn’t tell that version of Lisa that her marriage would end and Nick would die.

That the fight for sobriety would be lost and it would end his life at 40 years of age.

What an outrageously preposterous idea!! That version of me wouldn’t have believed it.

And there’s no way she would have believed she was capable of walking the path that she has, since that moment.

No way.

And so I look at that second photo of us at Shibuya Crossing and revel in the beauty of it all. A woman and her kids making the most of living.

With freshly broken hearts after the end of another relationship, we were a little battle weary. But I made a choice to BELIEVE and TRUST in myself that after it all I could actually create something remarkable.

I wrote the story of the life I wanted. Then I went out and lived it.

That’s what it takes, I think.

I held on. I trusted. I gathered together the courage I’d harvested from making it through the trickiest times.

I wrote the script for something better. And I went for it.

We get to do that ❤️

So exactly one week ago my friends and I kicked off our little #100ofsomething experiment.

Could we do 100 of something (anything!) that helps us build strength each day?

Hasn’t mattered what it is. Just needed to get going.

A week later we are still committed and having lots of fun!

TBH I needed to move past the ‘should I join a gym/get back to pilates/hire a PT/join an online membership’ procrastination and START SOMETHING!

I bloody love getting updates of the things they’ve done. It totally inspires me and keeps me accountable.

Deciding to post this so I can look back and see how far I could stretch at the beginning of this journey. I’ve never been super bendy but wow - I’m not going very far 😳

You’ll also notice for biceps that all I’m using is the bar.

My muscles went into deep shock last week and I have to do very little in order to ‘feel it’! 😂

I’m at the very start of building my strength, I have no idea where this will take me, but gee it really does feel nice to finally be doing the thing that I’d been saying I wanted to do for so long!

100 of something might seem like a lot but it’s really simple.

Some days I’ve punched the air fifty times with tin cans in my hands!

Today I did this little sesh after 45 minute walk.

I embraced him closely at the end of our very last

I embraced him closely at the end of our very last family dinner, though we didn’t know that’s what it was at the time.

The familiar smell. The shaking hands. His rough facial hair.

His family had kept him sober all day so that we could sit at our favourite restaurant and have a Father’s Day dinner, the five of us, before he boarded a plane to India.

“I hope you find the peace you’re looking for”, I whispered into his ear as we hugged.

Tears were in my eyes. He was teetering on the edge. The vital, creative, intelligent man that I had spent 16 years with was gripped by addiction. Practically unrecognisable.

We’d separated eight months earlier.

I was scared for him. For all of us. It was a huge risk, this trip.

And they were the last words I ever said to him. I wished him the peace he’d been craving as long as I’d known him.

And they haunt me, those words. As though I wished death upon him.

I didn’t, of course.

I hoped the peace would be found at the ashram he’d be visiting, near the end of his trip.

But he never made it there.

Almost five years on from his death I still think about those words.

And his smell. And the shaking hands. At what we didn’t know was the final goodbye.

Now it is me, the seeker of peace.

Left here to make peace with all of it. The whole messy, tragic lot.

It’s been big work.
